Italy, officially the Italian Social Republic is a fascist one-party totalitarian republic in Europe. Located mainly in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy also controls the land of former countries Albania and Austria. Italy covers an area of 431,933 km² (166,770 sq mi) and has a largely temperate seasonal and Mediterranean climate. Due to its shape, it is often referred to in Italy as lo Stivale (the Boot). With 68 million inhabitants, it is one of the most populous places in Europe. Italys capital Rome is one of the largest cities in Europe.  The city is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of the Tiber. Vatican City is an independent country geographically located within the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city: for this reason Rome has been often defined as capital of two states.
